WORKSHOP: Cool Homes, Warm Communities: Designing a Multicultural, Climate-Resilient and Affordable Western Sydney
Western Sydney is an experiment in density, resilience, and cultural multiplicity, where climate extremes, economic pragmatism, and migration collide. This workshop examines with the audience the evolution of housing in the region: how can it remain affordable yet durable, adaptive yet distinctive?
With rising temperatures and minimal coastal airflow, the built environment must respond to intensifying conditions through thoughtful design, material choices, and strategic urban planning. In a market where affordability often sets limitations, we explore the question: how can cost-effective housing reflect and reinforce Western Sydney’s distinct identity, setting it apart from the rest of the city?
Over 40% of Western Sydney speaks in other tongues; housing must reflect this diversity, integrating cultural narratives into its fabric. This is more than urban development—it is a vision for a Western Sydney distinct from the broader metropolitan landscape, where climate-conscious, socially connected, and economically accessible housing defines the future.
