Appointment of National Rail Safety Regulator's New Chief Executive

The National Rail Safety Regulator has appointed Dr. Natalie Pelham as its new Chief Executive, effective from early November. Dr. Pelham will succeed Sue McCarrey, who left ONRSR in December 2022. Currently serving as the Chief Investigator in the New South Wales Office of Transport Safety Investigations since January 2021, Dr. Pelham brings over 25 years of experience in safety regulation, policy, strategy, and reform at both state and national levels.
Under the leadership of ONRSR since its formation in 2013, Australia's rail industry has undergone significant national reforms, such as streamlining accreditation processes and implementing a risk-based national work program of audits and inspections. ONRSR has also improved the quality and accessibility of rail safety data, facilitating better decision-making by industry and governments.
South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Tom Koutsantonis, emphasized Dr. Pelham's extensive regulatory experience, making her well-suited for the new role. He expressed confidence in her leadership abilities and commitment to advocating for rail safety.
Federal Minister for Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government, Catherine King, acknowledged the crucial role of rail in connecting communities and transporting goods in Australia. She highlighted ONRSR's importance in ensuring safe railway operations, and she welcomed Dr. Pelham to her new position, emphasizing the Australian Government's commitment to promoting and improving national rail safety.
