Built Company Initiates Next Stage of Capella Sydney Redevelopment

Built has initiated construction on the second phase of the Capella Sydney redevelopment by Pontiac Land Group, following the successful completion of stage one in March 2023. Capella Sydney is a two-phase restoration project centered around two heritage-listed buildings in New South Wales, the former Department of Education building, and the Department of Lands building, collectively known as the Sandstone Precinct.

David Tsang, CEO of Pontiac Land Group, emphasized the importance of having a construction partner with a deep understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the precinct to ensure the preservation of these buildings. After the success of stage one, Built was chosen due to their expertise and experience in the hotel and hospitality industry to handle the complex heritage construction and refurbishment project's second phase.

The first stage involved the completion of the Capella Hotel's guest rooms, amenities, and some food and beverage establishments within the former Department of Education building in Sydney. Stage two, in the adjacent former Department of Lands building, will expand Capella Sydney into a mixed-use development, including event and meeting spaces, retail outlets, and dining establishments.

The project aims to provide public access to two of Sydney's most important heritage buildings and demonstrates innovative planning to preserve their historical value. The NSW Government has supported the project as an example of repurposing cherished heritage properties while maintaining the colonial architecture of New South Wales.

The redevelopment encompasses the sensitive restoration of heritage features, structural enhancements, and a blend of existing, heritage, and new construction materials. The Capella Sydney redevelopment is expected to create job opportunities in the construction and hospitality sectors, with the Department of Lands building slated for completion in 2026.
