Unveiling of Concept Designs for the University of New England's Tamworth Campus

The University of New England's Tamworth campus has revealed its initial concept designs, with a strong emphasis on creating a socially interactive and inclusive layout for the tertiary facility. The design team, led by Architectus and supported by Yerrabingin, a First Nations design partner, and Tyrell Studio, landscape architects, has proposed a four-storey building covering 2,000 square meters on the disused velodrome site in Tamworth's city center. This campus will be the first of its kind in Tamworth.

The design prioritizes long-term functionality by incorporating adaptable multifunctional spaces and inviting outdoor areas, including bike paths and walkways. The south-facing glass curtain wall provides views of the surrounding landscape, while a veranda encircling the facility offers a covered outdoor space for social interaction. The building's shape and profile mirror the nearby mountain range and river bend.

The facade combines recycled bricks, textured concrete, paved stonework, and natural and grey-toned steel, blending harmoniously with the environment. Landscaping defines flexible formal and informal outdoor learning zones. Inside, warm-toned timber, stucco, and corded carpet create a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by concealed skylights that bring in natural light.

Architectus principal Karl Eckermann stressed that the community's input, including consultations with First Nations peoples, students, and educators, guided the development of the concept designs. The goal is to establish a space that supports student success, equitable learning access, and inclusiveness. The materials, colors, and architectural elements reflect the local landscape, making it a meaningful addition to Tamworth.

UNE Vice-Chancellor Chris Moran emphasized that the proposed building design provides an inspiring physical space for student support and community engagement. The design allows for flexibility to accommodate the evolving needs of the community and educational requirements as the city progresses.

The project aims to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating and is scheduled to begin construction in early 2024, with an anticipated completion date in 2025.
