Major Digital Infrastructure Project Breaks Ground

Work has officially begun on NEXTDC’s S4 data centre in Western Sydney, marking the start of what will become one of the company’s largest Australian facilities. Located at 16 Johnston Crescent in Horsley Park, the project spans 30,743 square metres and includes two four storey buildings designed by HDR and Greenbox Architects. An on site sod turning and Smoking Ceremony signalled the commencement of construction, led by Uncle Colin Locke and attended by representatives from NEXTDC and Multiplex.

Built to Support High Performance Digital Demand

NEXTDC’s chief development officer Simon Cooper highlighted that the new 350 megawatt facility is the first in Australia to receive approval for direct interconnection with the New South Wales Transmission Grid. The centre is designed to deliver highly resilient, high performance infrastructure to support rapid growth in artificial intelligence computing, hyperscale cloud usage and national digital capability.

Economic and Workforce Impact

The development has been declared a State Significant Development and will provide a major employment boost for Western Sydney. At peak construction, approximately 1,800 workers will be on site. The project will also drive economic activity through significant procurement from local suppliers, contributing millions of dollars to the regional economy.

A Continued Partnership in Data Centre Delivery

The S4 project represents the latest milestone in the six year partnership between Multiplex and NEXTDC. The collaboration spans multiple data centres delivered or under construction across Perth, Brisbane and Sydney. Multiplex noted that early involvement allowed them to accelerate construction while maintaining high safety and build quality standards.

Additional Infrastructure and Advanced Construction Methods

Alongside the main buildings, Multiplex will deliver a high voltage switchroom structure and facilitate the installation of a 330 kilovolt electrical substation. The project incorporates extensive modular construction techniques, including prefabricated mechanical plant rooms, electrical switch rooms and major services pathways.
