Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald Chosen to Lead Major Upgrade of Sydney Airport Terminals
Following a global tender, Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald have been appointed as the lead consultants for a major expansion project linking Sydney Airport’s T2 and T3 terminals. This appointment kicks off a multi‑year program tied to the airport’s broader multi‑billion‑dollar capital works pipeline planned for the next five years.
Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton described the selection as a key milestone in delivering the airport’s long‑term strategy. He noted that the airport’s $6 billion capital program is essential for meeting future demand and supporting a forecast of up to 72 million passengers annually by 2045.
The T2–T3 upgrade is a central feature of the preliminary Master Plan 2045, aimed at increasing terminal capacity, streamlining airline operations and improving the overall passenger experience. As part of the masterplan, the project will introduce up to 12 new swing gates capable of serving both domestic and international flights. Early project work will include conceptual design, site investigations and risk assessments, which will support future approvals and planning processes.
Sydney Airport’s planning and delivery executive Paul Willis emphasised that the appointment represents a move toward a long‑term partnership framework, rather than isolated project contracts. This model is intended to improve efficiency, ensure design consistency and accelerate delivery while upholding strong standards across sustainability, safety and design.
Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald’s appointment also reflects their alignment with Sydney Airport’s goal of creating a more resilient and passenger‑focused environment. According to the airport’s statement, this long‑term collaboration is expected to elevate design quality, streamline coordination among disciplines and enhance overall project performance.
