Hunter Street Station to Create Sydney CBD's Longest Underground Pedestrian Network
Hunter Street Station will anchor Sydney CBD's longest east-west undercover pedestrian network, with two major underground connections linking commuters across a one-kilometre route beneath the heart of the city.
The Metro West station will feature pedestrian links connecting to Wynyard Station at its western end and a multi-level walkway joining the Hunter Street platforms directly to Martin Place Metro Station on the M1 line at its eastern end.
These connections will complete the missing link in an extensive weather-protected pedestrian network stretching from Barangaroo through Wynyard Walk to four major transport hubs—Wynyard, Hunter Street, and both metro and Sydney Trains services at Martin Place.
Commuters will benefit from a fast, safe and sheltered route across the CBD's core, eliminating exposure to weather and street-level traffic whilst improving connectivity between key employment precincts.
The Hunter Street Station pedestrian links will utilise both new and repurposed infrastructure to deliver the expanded network.
A western connection will link to Brookfield Place, Wynyard Station and, via Wynyard Walk, Barangaroo. This route will repurpose the existing Hunter Connection Tunnel, constructed in the 1930s as part of the original Wynyard Station works, which sits approximately 20 metres below George Street.
An eastern connection will join Metro West's Hunter Street platforms directly to platform level at Martin Place Metro Station on the M1 line. The Martin Place link will provide seamless interchange with services to northwest and southwest Sydney on the M1 line and Sydney Trains services on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. The walkway is currently under construction and will repurpose a tunnel previously used to support Metro construction works. The link will include escalators and lift access.
The underground pedestrian connections will reduce congestion at the station's above-ground entrances located on Hunter, George, O'Connell and Bligh Streets.
By 2036, more than 10,000 people are expected to move through the station every hour during the morning peak, with that figure projected to increase to 35,000 by 2056.
Set to accommodate the busiest platforms on the Metro West line, Hunter Street Station will serve as a primary gateway to western Sydney, connecting passengers to Greater Parramatta in approximately 20 minutes.
The station and precinct development will establish a dynamic new destination in the city centre, with new retail and commercial buildings rising 51 storeys above the western entrance and 58 storeys above the eastern entrance.
Sydney Metro West will transform travel across the city by doubling rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, supporting employment growth, stimulating economic development and boosting housing supply across Sydney's west.
Sydney Metro West is targeting an opening date of 2032.
The integrated approach to station design and pedestrian connectivity demonstrates how major transport infrastructure can reshape urban precincts, improving accessibility and creating economic opportunities across Sydney's expanding metropolitan area.
