Major Contract Signed: Construction on Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 Set to Commence in 2025

The Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 project is progressing with a $322 million contract awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd for the construction of the first segment, including a bridge over the Parramatta River. New artist's impressions depict the bridge linking Melrose Park and Wentworth Point for buses, light rail, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Design and initial works will commence this year, with major bridge construction scheduled for 2025. This bridge marks a significant infrastructure development, being the first major crossing over the Parramatta River in nearly four decades since the Ryde Bridge completion. Surrounding public spaces, including Archer Park, will also undergo enhancements.
The unnamed bridge aims to connect Melrose Park and Wentworth Point, fostering connectivity between these communities on either side of the river. It will contribute to a 9.5km network of walking and cycling paths upon completion of Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2.
The construction of the bridge is expected to create 1000 jobs, with 80% based in Western Sydney. The Minns Labour Government allocated $2.1 billion in the 2024-25 NSW Budget for the Stage 2 project, emphasizing community connectivity and growth in Western Sydney.
This milestone signifies a crucial advancement in extending the Parramatta Light Rail network, facilitating local transportation, reducing road congestion, and supporting housing development in Greater Parramatta. John Holland Pty Ltd secured the contract through a competitive selection process.
Construction activities will primarily occur on weekdays, with limited Saturday works focused on critical bridge construction tasks. Stage 2 will link Stage 1 and connect Parramatta CBD to Sydney Olympic Park, spanning through various suburbs with 14 stops over 10 kilometers.
Stage 1 (L4), linking Westmead to Carlingford, is nearing completion, with passenger services expected to commence before year-end.
Minister for Transport Jo Haylen expressed the significance of this development in enhancing connectivity, reducing congestion, and supporting economic growth in the region. Member for Parramatta Donna Davis highlighted the community's anticipation for Stage 2 and the positive impact it will bring to the area.
