Mixed-use redevelopment proposed for historical South Australian flour mill

Exciting plans have been unveiled to restore and transform the Angas Flour Mill, a significant historical landmark in Strathalbyn, South Australia.
Topology Studio has designed a proposal to revitalize the existing buildings at 27 Commercial Road, focusing on the refurbishment of the original structure and the addition of a new section on Mill Street. The vision for the site includes a versatile mixed-use hub that encompasses a shop, cafe, gallery, community and event space, accommodation, a restaurant, and an upper-level terrace.
Preserving the unique character of the existing buildings is at the forefront of the plans. The addition, constructed with red bricks, pays homage to the historic facade's sandstone and red brick materials, while an angled brick-clad lift within the extension serves as a nod to the mill's original chimney.
To enable the adaptive reuse of the unreinforced stone buildings, the restoration will involve strengthening measures such as an internal portal frame to distribute seismic loads and an external concrete stair acting as a buttress.
A prominent feature of the cultural hub is a glazed double-height connection that links the existing mill with the new addition, providing captivating views of beautifully landscaped gardens. This glazed link includes a ground-level entrance and an elevated passageway above, seamlessly connecting the upper building wings. Transparent glazing was chosen to ensure the stone facade remains the central focus.
Where feasible, the original fenestration will be reconstructed, and new elements will be thoughtfully integrated into the existing fabric, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
The plans are currently open for public exhibition, and feedback can be submitted until January 11, 2024.
