NSW Highway Upgrade Reaches Significant Milestone
)
The Barton Highway Upgrade in New South Wales has reached a significant milestone with vehicles now utilizing the final alignment of the upgraded road. This project is a collaborative effort between the Federal and State Governments, with New South Wales contributing $50 million and the Federal Government committing $150 million to fund the upgrade. As part of the project, all northbound traffic on the Barton Highway will be redirected onto the new lanes, while work takes place to prepare the existing highway for southbound traffic.
Upon the completion of this reconfiguration, a 7km section of the highway, extending from just north of the New South Wales-Australian Capital Territory border to just south of the Kaveneys Road intersection, will be open to four lanes. This signals the completion of the first stage of the Barton Highway upgrade. Plans are already underway for the second stage of duplication, which will extend from the northern end of the first stage, near Kaveneys Road, and continue northward towards Gooda Creek Road.
The Barton Highway project team will provide updates on the project's progress at the upcoming Murrumbateman Field Days, offering the community valuable information. The ultimate aim of this upgrade is to fully duplicate the Barton Highway, ensuring consistent, separated two-lane driving conditions in both directions and constant overtaking opportunities, without the need to merge. This will improve safety and travel conditions for all motorists on this strategically important rural highway that connects southern and western areas of New South Wales to the Australian Capital Territory.
