Peter Phillips AO LFRAIA

Principal, Orwell & Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips is the principal of Orwell & Peter Phillips, an architectural practice that has been active in building conservation since the 1950s. He has over forty years of experience in heritage practice and education

Peter has worked on some of Australia’s most significant sites, including the Australian Museum and Sydney Customs House, as well as many properties in The Rocks and Millers Point and several State-significant railway stations.

Peter has served as a heritage adviser to government at local, State and Commonwealth levels, and is a heritage specialist member of the NSW Government Architect’s State Design Review Panels. He is also a longstanding member of the NSW Heritage Council’s Technical Advisory Panel.

Peter was Secretary General of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) from 2017 to 2020, and previously President of Australia ICOMOS from 2005 to 2008. He was a member of the ICOMOS World Heritage Panel between 2015 and 2022.

In 2011 Peter was made a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects for his contribution to architectural conservation, and in 2023 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to heritage conservation, architecture and professional associations.

Peter’s particular interests are conserving the heritage of the past and helping to create the heritage of the future
