WORKSHOP: Cultural Influences in Architecture: Designing with Context

30 Apr 2026

Designing with cultural context is ultimately about creating architecture that belongs. In other words, it becomes rooted in place, responsive to climate, and reflective of the people who inhabit it. By learning from vernacular traditions, respecting local materials and practices, and thoughtfully integrating contemporary needs, architects can craft spaces that are both meaningful and enduring. As demonstrated in the works of Louis Kahn and Glenn Murcutt, the most powerful architecture does not imitate culture superficially, but interprets it with depth, allowing buildings to resonate emotionally while contributing responsibly to their environment and community.

As Louis Kahn once said, architecture begins with understanding “what a building wants to be.” Designing with context expands this idea—asking not only what the building wants, but what the place demands, what the people value, and what the culture remembers.
