Announcement of a Novel Engineered Stone Alternative Free from Silica

Researchers from the University of Adelaide have confirmed the authenticity of a silica-free alternative to engineered stone, developed by SilkSurface, a manufacturing company. In response to growing concerns within the industry regarding the safety of engineered stone, SilkSurface initiated investigations into safer options for stone benchtops.

SilkSurface's Managing Director, Ben Scott, stated that the company has been working on this alternative product for some time, aiming to provide customers with a viable option ahead of potential government discussions regarding the use of engineered stone in residential and commercial settings. Independent testing conducted by the University of Adelaide's School of Public Health has verified that the product is completely free of silica.

This newly developed material possesses the same visual appeal and durability as traditional engineered stone, while also offering stain and heat resistance. It is created by combining bauxite (aluminium hydroxide) and a polyester binder, which are then subjected to 400 tonnes of pressure before being diamond-polished, resulting in a durable and robust surface.

The versatility of the product is noteworthy, as it can be cut, sanded, and polished in a manner similar to timber, providing flexibility in design and customization options.

SilkSurface plans to make the product available for purchase in early 2024, offering customers a safer alternative to engineered stone without compromising on aesthetics or performance.
