The transformation of Sydney’s western waterfront has reached a major milestone, with the 22‑hectare Barangaroo South precinct now complete. Developed on a former container port, the project delivers a vibrant mixed‑use district that expands the city’s central business area and enhances public access to the harbour.

At the heart of the 6‑hectare built zone are the three International Towers Sydney, designed by Renzo Piano and arranged on a distinctive fan-shaped grid. Surrounding the commercial centre, two‑thirds of Barangaroo South has been dedicated to open space, including a continuous waterfront promenade, an amphitheatre‑style boardwalk and the one‑hectare Hickson Park. New public transport links and pedestrian connections integrate the precinct seamlessly with the broader city.

Lendlease describes the development as Australia’s first mixed-use carbon‑neutral precinct, supported by sustainable infrastructure such as a district cooling plant, a harbour water heat rejection system, recycled water treatment, onsite solar and an embedded electricity network.

Barangaroo South forms part of the wider Barangaroo redevelopment led by RSHP and Lendlease, which also includes the 15‑hectare Barangaroo Reserve completed in 2015 and Barangaroo Central, a low‑density residential neighbourhood set for completion in 2030.

Avtar Lotay, RSHP’s managing director, said: “Barangaroo is more than a masterplan — it’s a living part of the city that continues to evolve around the people who use it every day. It has become a destination, an extension of the city on the water’s edge.

“As a practice based here in one of the International Towers, we experience daily the first-hand vibrancy and connection this place brings to Sydney’s western waterfront. Barangaroo demonstrates what can be achieved when design prioritises public space, sustainability, and a sense of belonging — principles that continue to shape our work in Australia and beyond.”

The completion of Barangaroo South adds momentum to Sydney’s broader urban renewal efforts, showcasing how sustainable design, public space and mixed‑use precincts are shaping the future of the city’s waterfronts and CBD-fringe neighbourhoods.
