Construction to begin on $100m bypass around Sydney suburb

A 60-year wait for a bypass around Pitt Town in Sydney’s north-west is a big step closer with the announcement that a construction contract has been awarded.
The Minns government said Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure will build the long-awaited bypass which will connect Pitt Town Road with Cattai Road and feature two new roundabouts and a bridge across Hortons Creek.
Construction work on the 950 metre bypass will start in the coming months.
In a media release announcing the news today, Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said the new bypass will significantly reduce the number of trucks driving through the historic town centre.
More than 10,000 vehicles use the existing road every day and traffic volumes in the peak are expected to increase by 40 per cent in coming years.
“With the selection of the successful contractor, residents will soon be able to look forward to less congestion through the village and having a safer alternative for travel between Pitt Town and Wisemans Ferry,” Aitchison said.
“As the North West of Sydney continues to grow, it is essential that local communities have reliable infrastructure. The bypass will connect travellers going through Pitt Town and serve residents in this fast growing region.”
Key features of the bypass include:
- Extending Pitt Town Road past Bathurst Street onto Cattai Road, east of Eldon Street.
- Installing a new single lane roundabout at Eldon Street and Old Pitt Town Road.
- Closing a portion of Cattai Road to maintain access to Buckingham Street.
- Providing new bridge crossings of Hortons Creek.
- Installing a new single lane roundabout at Pitt Town Road/Bathurst Street and Glebe Road.
The Pitt Town bypass is expected to open to traffic in late 2026.
