Construction Complete on New Sydney Fish Market Ahead of January 2026 Opening
The new Sydney Fish Market has reached construction completion, marking a major milestone in a project almost a decade in the making. Final fit‑outs are now underway ahead of the anticipated 19 January 2026 opening.
Designed by 3XN, working with BVN and Aspect Studios, the project relocates the existing Blackwattle Bay market to an adjacent waterfront site. First proposed in 2016 and approved in 2020, the redevelopment delivers what is now the largest public market hall in the southern hemisphere, expected to draw more than six million local and international visitors annually.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the completion marked significant progress for an important cultural and tourism project.
The “milestone is an opportunity to reflect on all the hard work that has gone into completing this magnificent building on Sydney’s harbour foreshore,” Minns said.
A Landmark Architectural Feature: the 230‑Metre RooftopThe building’s defining design element is its 230‑metre‑long roof, shaped and patterned to resemble fish scales. The structure integrates:
• Rainwater harvesting
• Photovoltaic energy generation
• Skylights for enhanced natural illumination
• Multi‑coloured LED lighting for special events
The market sits on 481 marine piles and incorporates 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement. More than 400 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams, transported by barge from Glebe Island, form the main structural elements.
To improve the local marine environment, the project includes seawall tiles, coral panels and hanging fish habitats installed beneath the building.
A More Transparent and Accessible Market ExperienceA full glass façade wraps the new market, giving visitors clear views of daily operations, including live fish auctions. The design aims to make the market more welcoming, transparent and connected to the harbour.
The site provides over 6,000 square metres of public space and will feature five new art installations in the Civic Plaza, celebrating First Nations culture and the industrial heritage of Blackwattle Bay.
Expanded Retail and Dining CapacityRetail capacity will double relative to the existing market, with a mix of:
• Local seafood vendors
• Specialty food outlets
• Casual dining options
• Premium waterfront restaurants
Once the new market opens, the existing site will be redeveloped to deliver more than 1,500 new homes, forming part of a larger urban renewal program in the precinct.
The completion of construction marks a significant step toward the full transformation of the Blackwattle Bay waterfront, preparing Sydney to welcome a world‑class, future‑focused market precinct in early 2026.
