Revolutionary Plan Unveiled: Sydney's Housing Landscape Set for Unprecedented Transformation

A substantial new development in Sydney's southwest, Moore Point, is poised to introduce 11,000 new homes over an area roughly equivalent to eight Melbourne Cricket Grounds. Situated in Liverpool, this ambitious scheme has moved a step closer to approval following nearly a decade of bureaucratic obstacles and has been released for public consultation. The project aims to revamp a former industrial zone by the Georges River into a miniature "river city," providing insight into how Australia could address its housing crisis.

Moore Point will showcase towering glass apartment buildings on a 32-hectare plot, in addition to shopping centres, cafes, restaurants, green spaces, and a school catering to 1,000 students. With balconies replacing backyards and garages, residents will enjoy access to public transport via a footbridge linking to the Liverpool CBD and railway station.
Sydney's population is projected to reach 6.4 million by 2041, requiring an extra half a million residences.
The initiative is in line with the Australian government's objective of constructing 1.2 million homes by July 2029 to alleviate the housing shortfall. The Master Builders Association has predicted a nationwide deficit of approximately 166,000 homes, underscoring the importance of developments like Moore Point in meeting housing requirements.
NSW Premier Chris Minns backs the scheme, stressing that upward construction, rather than urban sprawl, is vital for Sydney's expansion. Moore Point is presently undergoing the rezoning process and, if sanctioned, will necessitate further planning and construction approvals.
The developer, Coronation Property, has committed to providing 400 affordable housing units for frontline workers. Following years of setbacks, Coronation's managing director, Joe Nahas, expressed enthusiasm about the project's advancement, hailing it as the "jewel in the crown" for southwestern Sydney.
Sydney's population is anticipated to hit 6.4 million by 2041, demanding an additional 500,000 homes. Moore Point and similar endeavours could represent a significant stride towards fulfilling these requirements. Nevertheless, there are apprehensions about the strain that such high-density developments might place on local infrastructure.
