out the ultimate segment of tunnel for the transformative Sydney Metro West initiative.
Commencing its journey from The Bays, TBM Ruby will partner with TBM Jessie to craft 2.3 kilometres of twin railway tunnels, delving deep beneath the harbour to establish a crucial link into the heart of the city for residents of Sydney's western regions.
In honour of women's rights advocate and Australia's pioneering radio astronomer Ruby Payne-Scott, TBM Ruby marks the sixth and final TBM enlisted to contribute to the construction of the 24-kilometre Metro West tunnels.
Operating ceaselessly, this 1,100-ton behemoth will gradually traverse alongside the iconic Anzac Bridge, pass through the Pyrmont Station area, navigate under Darling Harbour, and ultimately reach its endpoint at Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.
Meanwhile, TBM Jessie has been diligently burrowing through the parallel tunnel, having excavated 615 metres and installed 2,238 concrete segments to fortify the new tunnel walls since commencing its underground odyssey in June.
A colossal sum of 460,000 tonnes of material is slated for excavation, with the installation of 16,536 segments by both TBMs set to fashion the extensive network of tunnels spanning from The Bays to Hunter Street.
These tunnels represent Sydney's second sub-harbour railway link, complementing the initial connection between the city's north and Barangaroo for the metro M1 line, which has witnessed a remarkable 82 million journeys since its inauguration on August 19th.
