TBM Ruby Initiates Final Section of Sydney Metro West Tunnel Beneath Sydney Harbour

The commencement of the final tunnel section for the Sydney Metro West project has been marked by the deployment of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Ruby, signifying a significant milestone in the ambitious infrastructure undertaking.
Originating from The Bays, TBM Ruby is set to collaborate with TBM Jessie in the construction of the 2.3km twin railway tunnels, essential for establishing a vital new link between Sydney's western region and the central core of the city. These tunnels, extending deep under Sydney Harbour, will play a pivotal role in fortifying transportation connectivity for future generations.
In tribute to Ruby Payne-Scott, a trailblazer in women's rights and Australia's inaugural radio astronomer, TBM Ruby stands as the final member of the six TBMs designated for the 24km Metro West tunnels project.
Weighing a formidable 1,100 tonnes, TBM Ruby will operate around the clock to navigate this intricate section of the route, passing adjacent to the Anzac Bridge and delving beneath two segments of the harbour to reach the bustling Sydney Central Business District (CBD).
Jo Haylen, the New South Wales Minister for Transport, underscored the transformative impact of this initiative, emphasising its significance by stating, "Over the next 20 years, 420,000 individuals are projected to settle in the corridor surrounding these forthcoming Metro stations. This new rail line will play a crucial role in sustaining the mobility of our expanding city."
The Sydney Metro West project, with TBM Ruby now in action, stands as a testament to the state's commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure and fostering sustainable urban development in response to the evolving needs of Sydney's populace.
