Maria Gatica
As a Project Manager at Downer, I lead projects with focus on collaboration, accountability, and inclusive leadership. I hold a Master of Project Management from QUT and proudly serve as a PMI Sydney Construction Ambassador, contributing to the development of project management capability across the industry.
Beyond project delivery, I am the Deputy Chair of Downer’s EmpowHER Women’s Network and Lead of the Water Diversity Council. Through these roles, I actively advocate for diversity, representation, and inclusive pathways within construction and the water sector—driving meaningful change beyond the job site.
I am a regular contributor to industry conversations on leadership, diversity, and professional development. In 2024, I shared my experience on the Women in Water podcast at the OzWater Conference. In 2025, I joined AWA’s Unlocking the Power of Mentorship panel, exploring how to accelerate action through mentorship. That same year, I moderated the Sydney Build Expo panel Working Better Together: Why Diversity Is Key to Australia’s Construction Industry Thriving, and later moderated How Can We Engineer Our Own Paths and Achieve Success in a Male-Dominated Industry? at the Women in Engineering Summit.
Originally from Chile, I bring a global perspective to my work, speaking four languages and drawing on professional and cultural experiences gained from living and travelling across more than 50 countries.
In 2026, I am proud to serve as a Sydney Build Ambassador.
I believe true progress in construction isn’t measured only by timelines and budgets, but by the culture we create—and who we empower along the way.
Statement
Women belong in every part of the construction industry, from the site to the boardroom. Driving change means removing barriers, creating visible pathways, and ensuring women have equal opportunities to lead and succeed. Equality isn’t an initiative—it’s a competitive advantage for our industry.
