Born and raised in country NSW Mark has remained committed to the promotion of architecture in regional Australia throughout his career. In 1980, within 12 months of graduating from the UNSW, he established the Shoalhaven branch of a Sydney firm. After six years he purchased the business and entrenched his commitment to the South Coast eventually opening offices in Batemans Bay and Wollongong.

The growing practice embraced a collaborative approach between clients and the architectural team. Early work included several community/senior citizen centres, which led to aged care facilities and church buildings. These experiences honed his skills in consultation and working with community groups.

With a family history in building and having undertaken a number of his own construction projects, Mark has a pragmatic approach to architecture based on a sound construction knowledge.

In his extensive career, Mark has worked through hundreds of projects on design, the ‘nuts and bolts’ drawings and specifications and seeing the developments through construction. The breadth of projects includes numerous individual houses, community buildings and church complexes, aged care and health facilities; as well as schools and civic buildings. Supported by fellow directors, Mark ensures that all projects have the benefit of his overview and experience. An advocate of cooperative design, he promotes the wisdom of the crowd by encouraging the close engagement of clients in collaboration with specialist consultants to work with the diverse skills of the EJ team.

The strategic direction of the practice is under Mark’s guiding hand, informed by the wisdom of the Advisory Board he chairs. The voice of the firm is articulated through a weekly blog and monthly newsletter. Mark manages this communication encouraging the team to investigate, research and consider topical issues that engage with our clients and the community.
