Nick Sowden is a leading sustainable builder based in Sydney, Australia, and the founder of Sowden Building Solutions. With a career spanning over a decade, Nick has established himself as an expert in environmentally conscious construction, specialising in Passive House (PassivHaus) design and Hempcrete building methods. His work focuses on creating energy-efficient, healthy, and comfortable homes across Sydney’s Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, and North Shore.​

Nick's commitment to sustainable building began in 2012 after completing the Master Builders Green Builder course, which inspired him to integrate eco-friendly practices into his projects. In 2015, he began constructing Hempcrete homes in Sydney, utilising locally grown hemp to create structures that are both sustainable and environmentally friendly. He furthered his expertise by completing the GreenSmart Builders course in 2016 and the Passive House Tradesperson training in 2019, solidifying his dedication to high-performance, low-impact construction methods. ​

Under Nick's leadership, Sowden Building Solutions has become known for its innovative approach to sustainable construction. The company has completed notable projects, including the Balmain EnerPHit—a renovation of an 1884 Victorian cottage upgraded to meet Passive House standards, featuring modern interiors and restored heritage facades. Nick's work often involves retrofitting existing homes to achieve high energy efficiency, applying Passivhaus principles to enhance comfort and reduce environmental impact.

Beyond his building projects, Nick is an active member of the sustainable building community. He is a certified Passive House Tradesperson and a member of the Australian Passive House Association. Nick shares his knowledge through speaking engagements, such as his participation in the Sydney Build Expo, where he discusses topics like retrofitting homes to Passive House standards.

Nick's philosophy centres on the belief that sustainable building should not compromise on comfort or aesthetics. He emphasizes the importance of using materials like FSC-certified timbers and low-embodied-energy products, ensuring that each home is not only environmentally responsible but also tailored to the unique needs of its occupants. ​
