< Introducing Salim Dalla - Director at SMD Consulting >
1) A short Bio
Salim Dalla is the Founder of SMD Consulting Pty Ltd, a Sydney-based practice specialising in engineering, compliance strategy, and digital transformation for the built environment. With over 25 years of industry experience, Salim works with construction businesses and product suppliers to transform their operations into efficient, data-driven workflows - improving safety, performance, and consistency across Australia’s construction landscape.
2) Fun fact + What’s one project or moment in your career that stands out?
Growing up, I wanted to be an astronomer. I was fascinated by space - how things worked, and the scale of it all. Somewhere along the way, that path changed… and I found myself in construction. What drew me in wasn’t just the buildings - it was the environment.
The smell of fresh timber. Raw concrete being poured. The presence of solid steel.
Looking back, I don’t think the interest in systems ever left - it just shifted from space to how businesses and projects operate here on the ground.
A moment that stands out in my career wasn’t tied to one project, but to a shift I witnessed within a business function I’d managed. My team moved from constant firefighting to operating with structure and visibility. Less pressure. Better decisions. More control. That’s when it truly clicked for me what meaningful transformation looks like—and why I wanted to share my experience with the industry: to help shape a legacy of better, more sustainable ways of working for the generations that follow.
3) What challenges have you seen in the industry, and how has this shaped your perspective?
One of the biggest challenges I see is that many issues get labelled as “people problems.” But more often than not, they’re structural.
Workflows that aren’t clearly defined. Limited visibility across projects. Roles that evolve without clear accountability
Over time, this creates pressure - and that pressure gets absorbed by people. It’s shaped my perspective to look deeper - beyond the symptoms - and focus on how a business is actually set up to operate.
4) What excites you most about digital construction and where the industry is heading?
What excites me most is the opportunity to create clarity. We’re moving towards a more connected, data-informed industry - but the real value isn’t just in the technology. It’s in what that technology enables. Better decisions. Earlier visibility. More predictable outcomes.
For me, digital construction isn’t about tools - it’s about enabling a better way of working.
5) What’s one piece of advice you would give to construction professionals looking to embrace digital transformation?
Start by understanding how your business actually runs. Not how it’s documented, but how it really works day-to-day. Where decisions are made. Where delays occur. Where things rely on individuals. Once you see that clearly, the path forward becomes much simpler. Technology should support a well-defined way of operating - not try to fix a broken one.
6) What does being part of Sydney Build mean to you?
Sydney Build is more than an event. It’s a place where the industry comes together to share ideas, challenge thinking, and look ahead. For me, it’s about contributing to that conversation - and being part of shaping how the industry evolves in a practical and meaningful way.
Tune in for fresh perspectives, practical advice and a closer look at the people shaping the future of our built environment!
