< Introducing Santosh Kulkarni - Founder and CEO at TRADIE PAL >
1) A short Bio
Dr. Santosh Kulkarni is a serial entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in product leadership and scaling technology ventures. He specialises in translating complex research into real-world outcomes, currently focusing on bridging the gap between advanced AI and the construction industry.
2) Fun fact + What surprised you most about breaking into construction as a tech founder?
I spent most of my life being remarkably unhandy with actual tools! I’ve spent over 25 years as a technologist working at research centres and tech startups, but put a hammer in my hand and I was out of my element. That changed very quickly after I built my first house!
What surprised me most when I finally ventured into the construction sector was debunking the myth that the trade industry is tech-averse. I found that tradies and builders are actually incredibly tech-curious; they have a sharp appetite for innovation and are constantly looking for ways technology can help them be more productive and improve business efficiency
3) What do emerging technologies and AI mean for blue-collar workers in construction?
While AI is often dismissed as a corporate buzzword, for the blue-collar sector, it represents a 'digital apprentice.' In the past, we saw a shift with digital billing and invoicing. AI takes this a step further by automating the thinking behind the task—predicting material needs, optimising schedules, and managing cash flow. Perhaps the most transformative impact is in customer communications. A tradie's biggest bottleneck is being 'on the tools' while the phone is ringing. AI acts as a seamless conduit, handling inbound customer communication so the professional can focus on the craft.
4) How has digital transformation changed the way projects are planned, tracked, and delivered?
We’ve moved far beyond simple digital spreadsheets. Digital transformation has introduced real time visibility into the construction lifecycle. We can anticipate supply chain delays before they halt a project. Mobile apps can handle quoting, scheduling and timesheets seamlessly. The goal of all these advancements is to reduce the 'administrative burden' on workers, allowing projects to be delivered with higher margins and fewer headaches.
5) What made you decide to bring your tech startup into the construction industry? What does digital construction mean to you?
After completing my PhD in AI twenty five years ago, I spent my career at the cutting edge of technology. However, I’ve always believed that the true value of innovation is measured by its democratisation—bringing the power of high-level AI to the local builder, not just the global enterprise. To me, 'Digital Construction' isn't about replacing humans; it’s about empowering them. It’s about building a framework where technology handles the administrative chores and the professional handles their craft. My mission is to provide the sector with both the tools to succeed and the ‘safe guards' to navigate this new landscape safely.
6) What advice would you give to companies that are still early in their digital transformation journey?
The market is currently being flooded with 'AI-enabled' products, and it can be difficult to distinguish between a shiny toy and a strategic tool. My advice is to perform rigorous due diligence: look past the marketing and vet the credentials and experience of the founders. Start by solving one specific problem—whether that’s customer support or project/job scheduling—rather than trying to overhaul your entire workflow overnight. Transformation is a marathon, not a sprint.
